Wade Terpstra doesn’t mind if you call him lazy. In fact, Wade and his wife Lisa opened the Basement Garage for just that reason. They knew that if they didn’t have a space where they could leave their music gear set-up, they wouldn’t play with it.
So, when they built their new home off Massassauga Road, they knew that a music room was going to be part of it. What they didn’t know was that their music room was soon going to become everyone’s music room.
“We wanted a room with everything set up so that we would be motivated to play,” Wade says. “Once we started, everyone said ‘wow, the basement is cool.'”
Today, the Basement Garage is a fully-outfitted music space that bands can rent for rehearsals and musicians of all types can enjoy.
The Terpstras host an open jam on the last Sunday afternoon of each month and say that it’s a great way to bring the local music community together.
“A lot of people come the first time and say ‘oh, I’m just going to listen’,” Lisa says. “They listen to a couple of songs and then say ‘this is great. I feel comfortable here.’ The next thing you know they are on the drums or are up singing a song. It works out really well for everyone.”
