Jason Meens is building a reputation as a terrific local promoter that brings world-class blues-rock musicians to play in intimate settings in Belleville and his show Friday night with Angel Forrest at The Belleville Club took that up another notch.
Forrest is a powerhouse vocalist from Montreal that has honed her chops over nearly three decades. Friday’s show was an acoustic trio performance with her husband and song-writing partner Denis Coulombe as well lead guitarist Ricky Paquette. They tore through a pair of sweaty sets that combined lots of rock, blues, jazz and folk into a unique blend of familiar hits and likable originals.
On her latest record – Angel’s 11 – Forrest is backed by 11 different guitar players and they play the occasional show with all 11 guitar players on stage at the same time. For the Belleville Club show, she just had two, but they combined for a terrific sound. Coulombe held down the rhythm end while Paquette and his fleet fingers drew frequent applause from the 60 or so lucky folks in attendance.
Forrest is returning to the region this fall with an electric set for the Red, White & Blues show in Picton.
